Two dead and 50 injured in US passenger and freight train collision

The collision occurred in Cayce around 2:45 a.m. Sunday, Lexington County spokesperson Harrison Cahill said.

Early on Sunday morning an Amtrak passenger train traveling from NY to Miami collided with a freight train in SC, killing at least two, injuring about 70 more and spilling of thousands of gallons of fuel.

Passenger Derek Pettaway told CBS News that he was sleeping when the train began "shaking violently" before coming to a sudden halt. Injuries range from scratches to broken bones.

The wreck involving Amtrak Train 91, heading from NY to Miami, occurred at 2:35 Cayce, S.C., about 10 miles south of Columbia, according to Derrec Becker of South Carolina Emergency Management. "CSX controls the dispatching of all trains, including directing the signal systems which control the access to sidings and yards", the statement reads.

The Lexington County Sheriff's Department tweeted that the collusion and derailment occurred near Charleston Highway and Pine Ridge Road.

"It's a disgusting thing to see to understand the force that is involved", McMaster said after viewing scene. The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating, the firm said.

President Trump was briefed on the train accident and is receiving regular updates, according to Deputy White House Press Secretary Lindsay Walters. "Currently there is one patient that is in critical condition, there are two others that are in serious and a few others that are now being evaluated for possible serious conditions", he said.

WLTX shared drone footage of the crash aftermath on social media, showing the points of collision and the train's derailed cars.

Amtrak says its train's lead engine and some of the passenger cars derailed.

"His thoughts and prayers are with those affected by this bad tragedy", said McMaster's spokesman, Bryan Symmes.

This is the second fatal Amtrak crash nationally in a week and the third in the last few months.
