Turkish Jets Strike Kurdish YPG Militia Targets in Syria: Army

With regards to Turkey's military operations in Afrin, Piri said the European Union parliament "recognizes Turkey's right to protect its borders", but warned of the consequences of military action in the region.

He is accused of being a member of an armed terrorist organization, the source added.

Ankara began the campaign shortly after the United States announced its intent to train a 30,000-strong "border security force" in Syria, to be comprised of members of the Syrian Democratic Forces, an alliance dominated by the YPG.

Furthermore, the text mentions specifically the case of Ali Erol, LGBTQ human rights defender, who was arrested on 2 February 2018 and on unspecified grounds, and released just yesterday.

Since January 20, Turkey has been conducting a military operation, codenamed "Olive Branch", against the Kurdish forces entrenched in Syria's Afrin region, an area controlled by the US-backed YPG, which Ankara regards as an affiliate of the Kurdistan's Workers' Party (PKK).

The PYD/PKK terrorist group posted fake and distorted photographs on social media, falsely claiming that they were from Afrin.

Turkey sees the YPG - trained, armed and supported by the USA to fight against ISIL - as an extension of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), which has fought a bloody, decades-long uprising in the country.

According to the Turkish General Staff, the operation aims to establish security and stability along Turkish borders and in the region as well as to protect Syrian people from the oppression and cruelty of terrorists.

It said the operation is being carried out under the framework of Turkey's rights based on worldwide law.

The military also said, "utmost importance" is being placed on not harming any civilians.

Afrin has been a major hideout for the YPG/PKK since July 2012 when the Assad regime in Syria left the city to the terror group without putting up a fight.
