Vikings hire Eagles QB coach DeFilippo as OC

During the 2017 season, DeFilippo led his group of quarterbacks through unique circumstances, helping second-year quarterback Carson Wentz reach his superstar potential and guiding back up Nick Foles to one of the most prolific postseasons in National Football League history.

DeFilippo replaces Pat Shurmur as Vikings OC, Shurmur having left to take over as head coach of the New York Giants. Philadelphia OC Frank Reich is a candidate for the Colts' head coach opening that became vacant this week after Josh McDaniels made a decision to remain as the offensive coordinator for the New England Patriots.

DeFilippo (pronounced dee-fah-LIP-oh) joins the Minnesota Vikings as the team's offensive coordinator in 2018 after serving as the Eagles quarterbacks coach during their Super Bowl-winning 2017 season. He got rave reviews for developing second-year quarterback Carson Wentz and for getting backup Nick Foles up to speed after Wentz went down December 10 with a season-ending knee injury.

DeFilippo and Murray talked on the field before the Eagles' win over the Vikings in the NFC Championship game.

" Flip's situation was that he handled red zone ... so when different coaches give their presentations, you remember his being a little more energetic", Murray said per a team release. "Barely sleeps. Fundamentals, giving us the game plan, giving us all our checks, extremely detailed". He was passionate. I knew Derek (Carr) liked him, that's for sure. Chargers wide receiver coach Nick Sirianni worked as the quarterbacks coach in San Diego from 2013 to '15 when Reich was the offensive coordinator, and Chiefs assistant offensive line coach Corey Matthaei was an assistant quarterbacks coach under Pederson in Kansas City in 2015. He's done an fantastic job this year. But the great thing about our team and our coaching staff is, they work so well together and they do it all together.

Shurmur spent three seasons coaching with Staley in Philadelphia as the former Eagles running back was just scratching the surface of his coaching career. In the coming weeks, he'll play a role in determining the franchise's QB for next season - a move that will strongly determine the success or failure of the Vikings making another run toward the Super Bowl.

Here's a quote from Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer.
