Koreas share historic handshake at Olympic opening ceremony

As Pence sat with South Korean President Moon Jae-In amid a heavy blanket of security that delayed many fans from getting to the venue for the start, the show was stolen by the colorful group of North Korean cheerleaders dispatched south of the border by leader Kim Jong Un.

The personal invitation from Kim was delivered by his younger sister, Kim Yo Jong, during talks and a lunch Moon hosted at the presidential Blue House in Seoul.

Past "charm offensives" have been interpreted as North Korea trying to recoup from crippling sanctions on their nuclear program, or trying to drive a wedge between Seoul and its us ally.

But Moon has maintained that any talks with North Korea should be focused on brokering peace between the two nations, and that South Korea would not meet the north without its assurances of working to deescalate the nuclear tensions on the peninsula.

Organizers for the 2018 Winter Olympics say a cyberattack may have occurred during Friday's opening ceremony in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

Moon shook hands with both Kim Yo Jong and Kim Yong Nam at the Olympics opening ceremony and they cheered as athletes from North and South entered the arena together behind a unification flag showing an undivided Korean peninsula.

Pyeongchang Olympics organisers were looking into a disruption of non-critical systems on the day of the opening ceremony but could not yet confirm if it was a cyberattack, Games spokesman Sung Baik-you said on Saturday.

"At the outset of any new dialogue or negotiations", he said Friday, Pyongyang had to "put denuclearisation on the table and take concrete steps with the world community to dismantle, permanently and irreversibly, their nuclear and ballistic missile programmes".

In an interview with a local media outlet after the match, Shin said she was too nervous and she should've done better. Some 28,500 US servicemembers are based in the South.

Echoing that widely held view was 44-year-old office worker Oh Eun Seok, who said: "It is a historic game".

Sources told CNN that the sending of ceremonial head of state Kim Yong Nam and Kim's sibling Kim Yo Jong reads as more of a symbolic act than any concrete diplomatic initiative by North Korea.

Switzerland's Alina Muller nearly single-handedly spoiled Korea's Olympic unity moment on Saturday, scoring four goals to power the Swiss to an 8-0 win over Korea's unified women's ice hockey team.

The growing number of apparently unintentional references to Pyongyang irked at least one Twitter user in Washington, DC, who tweeted: "The number of people mistakenly using #Pyongyang2018 to tweet about #PyeongChang2018 is not that surprising but nevertheless upsetting".

In a surreal mixture of dignitaries, the Olympic Stadium's VIP box included Kim Yo Jong and North Korea's nominal head of state, Kim Yong Nam, sitting above and behind U.S. Vice President Mike Pence and fellow hardliner Shinzo Abe, the leader of Japan. Moon, a dove who wants to resolve the nuclear standoff diplomatically and peacefully, quickly responded to Kim's outreach by offering talks.

However, the result mattered less than the political symbolism as around 200 of North Korea's famed "army of beauties" charmed a crowd of 3,600 besotted locals with nostalgic oldies - and even broke out a Mexican wave. "The world cannot turn a blind eye to the oppression & threats of the Kim regime", he tweeted earlier Saturday.
