A firefight erupted Saturday when heavily armed gunmen stormed the base in Jammu, the second-largest city in the occupied valley.

Earlier on Monday morning the CRPF men foiled a "possible Fidayeen attack" on their camp and opened fire on suspected militants who were trying to enter into the premises.

Despite being a coalition partner with hardliner Bharatiya Janta Party, India-held Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti Monday took a bold step and stressed the need for Pak-India bilateral talks on Kashmir.

The defence minister then met chief minister Mehbooba Mufti who briefed her on the security situation in the wake of the Sunjuwan terror attack.

"Intelligence inputs show that terrorists were controlled by their handlers from across border".

Sitharaman she said the evidence was being scrutinised by the National Investigation Agency (NIA), which shall soon furnish a detailed report. Three terrorists have been eliminated.

The Defence Minister said the terrorists were all Pakistanis and were handled by their Jaish-e-Muhammad (JeM) leaders across the border. "An alert had been sounded on the likelihood of a terrorist attack around this period", she said.

Sitharaman assured full support to the Army and said, "The ministry of defence, me as the defence minister, and the Government of India under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership will not let anybody down". Though the Indian efforts have proved to be futile but the irresponsible statements and increased ceasefire violations on the Line of Control and the Working Boundary by the Indian troops pose grave threat to regional peace and security.

He warned against "any Indian aggression, strategic miscalculation, or misadventure regardless of its scale, mode, or location", saying Pakistan will respond with an equal and proportionate retaliation.
