Pakistan court sentences Zainab's killer to death on four counts

Imran was handed four separate death sentences after being convicted of the rape and murder of Zainab, as well as terrorism charges, prosecutor general of Punjab province Ihtesham Qadir said after a special anti-terrorism court passed its judgement. He has also been sentenced to seven years in jail with a fine of Rs1 million for desecrating the body of a minor. Another 7-year jail sentence and Rs 2 million fine were imposed for concealing the body in a trash heap.

"It was a fair trial in which the suspect was given a chance to defend himself", Qadir said, adding the ATC has awarded the sentence to the accused only in the case of the seven-year-old girl.

The abuse was uncovered in 2015 and a number of suspects were arrested.

It is pertinent to mention that the court has completed the whole trial procedure and recorded all the evidence even after the convict recorded his confessional statement.

The prosecutor submitted a list of 56 witnesses before the court.

According to the Dawn news, Imran now has 15 days to appeal against the verdict. The police then matched the DNA with the convicted killer.

With whole country asking for explanations, police authorities recognized that in past year at least 11 children had been raped and all of m, except for two, had died in area of Kasur.

The man confessed to all eight attacks, including the death of Zainab.

Angered over her murder at the time, residents attacked a police station, sparking clashes in which two persons were killed.

Law enforcement agencies came under mounting pressure to find the killer of Zainab and other children in the region. The Government of Punjab indicated n that sample taken with Ali "corresponded 100%" with remains found in girl, and that defendant confessed crime after having undergone test of polygraph.

The verdict was announced in Kot Lakhpat jail amid tight security.

It was revealed that Imran was initially booked on suspicion of involvement in the rape and murder of Zainab but was later released after his DNA samples were collected by the police.

The trial court had concluded the proceedings within four days.
