Maruti Suzuki Alto crosses 35 lakh unit sales milestone

India's largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki sold a total of 149,824 units in February 2018 and registered 15 percent growth over the same period previous year.

This category, which is called "compact" by Maruti, saw an increase of 39% in sales to 65,213 cars sold during February.

Sales of mini segment cars, including Alto and WagonR, witnessed a 2.1 percent rise to 33,789 units during the month under review from 33,079 units in February 2017, MSI said. This includes 137,900 units in the domestic market and 11,924 units of exports. The company said it exported 10,917 units.

The cumulative figure for April 2017-February 2018 period now stands at 5,22,929 units (Domestic + Exports) with domestic sales contributing more than 86% to the overall sales. Motorcycle sales in the domestic market rose 23%, the company said.

MSI on Thursday also released its February sales data.

Tata Motors domestic sales of commercial vehicles in the month grew 36 per cent to 41,222 units compared to 30,407 units in the year-ago period, fuelled by robust infrastructural developments, fresh tenders in auto carriers, coal movement and the petroleum sector. As for exports, the carmakers registered a growth of 24.9 per cent with 11,924 units compared to the 9,545 units exported in February 2017.

The growth rate is above average for this year. The demand was driven by the company's Tiago, Tigor, Nexon and Hexa models. Exports saw a decent growth of nearly 48 per cent at 841 units, compared to the 570 units exported in February 2017. "The passenger auto segment registered a strong growth of 17% while the UV [utility vehicle] segment grew by 165%, clearly showing a trend of growing customer base across segments", the company said.

Sales of mid-sized sedan Ciaz declined by 16.8 per cent to 4,897 units. The company's total exports also saw double digit growth with 2,654 units against the 2,300 units exported a year ago in February 2017, registering a growth of 15 per cent.
