Pakistan's ruling PML-N appoints Shahbaz Sharif as new chief

The Express Tribune quoted well-placed sources in the party asdisclosing that the party has called for a meeting of its Central Working Committee at the PML-N Secretariat here on Tuesday, where Shehbaz will be elected as the new interim party president. The PML-N will keep this verdict in mind while selecting its Punjab chief.

PM Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, Maryam Nawaz, Hamza Shehbaz Sharif, Punjab Governor Rafiq Rajwan, Tallal Chaudhry, Railways Minister Khawaja Saad Rafique and other leaders of the party unanimously expressed confidence over the decision of the Nawaz Sharif.

Mr Sharif is also being tried by a separate anti-corruption court on other charges - proceedings ordered by the Supreme Court last July - and could face jail when that trial winds up as soon as next month. The apex court also declared all orders by Sharif as null and void.

"Begum Kulsoom would have been the best choice to succeed Nawaz Sharif but since she is not well and is recovering from throat cancer (lymphoma) in London, Shahbaz Sharif has become the ultimate choice although some close to Nawaz have reservations (about him)".

In the meeting, the former prime minister has been elected as Quaid (supreme leader) of the party for life. PML (N) is still expected to emerge as the biggest party in Senate.

As per the PML-N constitution, the party's CWC is to elect its acting party chief within a week of the top party seat is vacated due to any reason. Then the party's general council is required to elect a president within 45 days.

Nawaz, a three-time premier, was elevated to post of "Quaid (leader) for life" of the PML-N.

After becoming the party president, Shahbaz praised his elder brother for making the PML-N the country's most popular political force.

Urging the crowd to chant slogans of 'Vote ko izzat do' (Give respect to the vote), Nawaz Sharif said that he would not respect those who did not believe in the sanctity of vote.

Nawaz has already nominated Shahbaz for the prime minister candidate if PML-N wins this year's general elections.
