Hot mess: JR Smith suspended for throwing soup at coach

INDEPENDENCE, Ohio (AP) - Chicken noodle or tomato?

CLEVELAND (AP) - A person familiar with the situation says Cavaliers guard J.R. Smith was suspended one game for throwing a bowl of soup at assistant coach Damon Jones. He was seen at shootaround Thursday playing P-I-G with George Hill. "He'll be ready for tomorrow and be ready to go on Saturday (against Denver)".

Until then, what triggered his brothy outburst remains a mystery.

The suspension will cost Smith $94,897, according to ESPN, and because the punishment was doled out by the team, the Cavaliers will not benefit from any related luxury-tax relief. Smith is expected to practice Friday.

JR Smith was drafted 18th overall in the 2004 NBA Draft by the New Orleans Hornets straight out of high school.

The Cavaliers shared no specific information on Smith's infraction, but for a franchise that appears to be coming together at the right moment, any trouble from a team leader is likely unwelcome.

But Smith hasn't been himself this season. Smith often times takes more hard shots than need be, and without a player of LeBron's caliber on the second unit, he might be able to fit in perfectly.

A 14-year veteran, Smith is averaging 8.3 points on 39.2 percent shooting from the field and 36.3 percent shooting from three this season. Wade has since been traded back to Miami, where he played much of his legendary career.

"He was great this morning", said Lue, who will start Rodney Hood in Smith's place.

Jones, 41, had an 11-year National Basketball Association career as a player and has been on the Cavs' staff since 2014.
