USA presses first-ever sale of anti-tank missiles to Ukraine

However, these missiles are being provided from U.S. Army stocks and the CLUs will be obtained from on-hand Special Defense Acquisition Fund (SDAF)-purchased stocks.

State Department makes determination approving Javelin missile sale to UkrainePoltorak said the weapons would help the Ukrainian military respond to attacks that he said Russian Federation was responsible for coordinating. The State Department had previously discussed a plan for the sale in December, but only now formally approved it.

The Defense Security Cooperation Agency also said in its official notice that "this proposed sale will contribute to the foreign policy and national security of the United States by improving the security of Ukraine".

The resolution, first of all, condemns Russia's continuing armed aggression against Ukraine, emphasizes the inadmissibility of any violations by the Russian occupation authorities of human rights and freedoms in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine, as well as the fact that Russia, as an occupying power, is fully responsible for the violation of the rights of the civilian population in the occupied territory.

According to the Pentagon, Ukraine has asked to buy 210 Javelin missiles and 37 Javelin Command Launch Units. Joni Ernst said in a statement Thursday.

Implementation of this proposed sale will require U.S. Government and/or contractor representatives to travel to Ukraine temporarily in order to conduct training. Trump, however, approved the December sale following the unveiling of his National Security Strategy, which notes that Russian Federation is creating "an unstable frontier in Eurasia". "Providing lethal aid to Ukraine shows that the United States is serious about protecting the interests of our nation and our allies".

On February 17, President Poroshenko said Ukraine would receive more aid from the US, beyond Javelins, in the framework of military-technical cooperation. The Raytheon/Lockheed Martin Javelin Joint Venture would be the prime contractor on the sale.
