People Arrested During Immigration Sweep In California

Homan added on Fox News' "Fox & Friends" that the Department of Justice is "reviewing" whether Schaaf broke any laws.

Mayor Libby Schaaf tweeted on Saturday that an immigration operation was imminent in the San Francisco area, including Oakland, possibly within 24 hours.

Despite the warning from Oakland's Mayor, ICE was able to successfully arrest at least 150 illegal aliens in Northern California.

In a statement responding to Schaaf's Twitter warning, ICE Acting Director Thomas Homan ripped the Oakland mayor, accusing her of putting immigration officers at risk and making it easier for criminals to avoid detection.

"There are ICE operations every day and it is unclear what the mayor is referring to", the agency told KGO-TV.

Of the 232 people arrested, ICE said 115 had prior criminal convictions, including some for violent or sexual offenses. Agents arrested more than 200 people last month in the Los Angeles area. He blamed Schaaf in part.

Laurie Levenson, a Loyola Law School professor and former federal prosecutor, said she believed Schaaf's objective in making the warning was not to help people evade the law, but to give them the opportunity to make preparations for their families or get appropriate legal advice. Community organizer, Jesus Ruiz, said the rumors paralyze the community.

"The arrestees who are not being federally prosecuted will be processed administratively for removal from the United States", the agency said.

"Normally the federal government takes the lead and the state authorities follow in these sorts of things", he said.

It comes as sanctuary jurisdictions - a loose term generally used to describe areas whose laws do not require cooperation with federal immigration officials - butt up against the Trump administration's crackdown on enforcement.

"That would be extraordinary", he said.

Schaaf said she sought legal advice before issuing her warning.

"I continue to feel confident that what I did was the right thing and was legal", Schaaf told reporters.

Oakland, like many other California municipalities, considers itself a 'Sanctuary City, ' often shielding illegal immigrants and undocumented workers from federal authorities and border patrol agents. "We believe our community is safer when families stay together", she stated.

The arrests were part of a four-day targeted operation that ran from the Bakersfield area to the OR border. They're bringing drugs. They're bringing crime.

Immigration detainers lodged against them have been "repeatedly ignored", Schwab said.

A person from El Salvador previously deported and convicted of assault was arrested by ICE. Of those, he said, 81% had criminal convictions.
