Delta says NRA discount was only used for 13 tickets

American Airlines has noted that it never offered any discount to NRA members.

The governor said this week that he would find "a pathway forward for the elimination of sales tax on jet fuel, which is non-negotiable".

"Unfortunately, we're looking at political gamesmanship, and trying to send ultraconservative messages for the Republican primary", Henson said.

Deal didn't hold a news conference or bill-signing ceremony in what amounted to an anti-climactic end to legislation that roiled the statehouse - and became part of the national debate on gun violence - throughout the week. Bastian applauded the governor in his memo to Delta staff, calling him a "great friend" to the company. I know this action by the state legislature troubled him as it does all of us.

Only 13 people ever had taken advantage of the defunct discount program, according to Delta spokesman Trebor Banstetter.

In a memo to employees posted to its website, Delta addressed the weeklong uproar surrounding its decision last week to no longer offer a travel discount to NRA members after a February 14 massacre of 17 students and educators at a Florida high school reignited the nation's long-running debate on gun ownership laws.

The state Senate's presiding officer, Republican Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle, set up the showdown between gun-rights supporters and one of Georgia's biggest private employers when he vowed Monday to stop any tax break that would benefit Delta.

Bastian cited the NRA's "controversial statements" in the wake of the deadly shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, which left 17 students and staff members dead. In fact, he doubled down on Delta's decision to drop its promotional relationship with the NRA in a company-wide memo on Friday. "That is not the case".

"Our objective in removing any implied affiliation with the NRA was to remove Delta from this debate", Bastian explained.

House Bill 918, which includes the first income tax cut in state history, passed Georgia's Senate by a vote of 44-10 and its House by a vote of 135-24.

Governors of NY and Virginia, a House lawmaker from OH and the mayor of Birmingham, Ala., were among officials who jabbed Georgia in the dispute and offered to have Delta move its headquarters from Atlanta.

Delta did not respond to a request for comment Friday afternoon about the tax bill, but Bastian thanked Deal in his March 2 memo for his work on the tax exemption.

"Our home is Atlanta and we are proud and honored to locate our headquarters here", Bastian wrote.

"I will be a governor that's going to be committed to economic prosperity, recruiting the kind of jobs that we want here in the state", Cagle said.
