Police said that the wedding guests from the district of Bhavnagar were travelling to the ceremony in a nearby village when the driver tried to pass a auto on a narrow bridge and lost control of the vehicle. Other injured victims have been rushed to hospital.

Among those injured, eight were reported to be in a critical condition, minister of state for home Pradipsinh Jadeja said, adding that the deceased included four children and eight women. At least 26 persons have died and dozens more are feared injured in the accident.

"It appears that the driver of the truck was drowsy and lost control leading to the accident".

"The truck fell into the pit when its driver tried to overtake another vehicle on the bridge in the morning hours". Those who were injured were taken to a local government hospital for treatment while those who are dead are sent to the families.

Police said the marriage party was on their way from Anida village of Palitana taluka of Bhavnagar to Tatam village in Gadhda taluka of neighbouring Botad district.

Reports are coming that the truck was carrying almost 60 people. The fire brigade has also joined the rescue operations.

Prime Minister, Narendra Modi took to Twitter to offer his condolences regarding the incident. The accident was extremely unfortunate and anguishing.
