A technical malfunction was behind the crash, the ministry said, adding that the aircraft was not attacked. The BBC World News said the aircraft was carrying 26 passengers and 6 crew members when it went down. The cargo plane has crashed at the Russian air base in Syria.

President Vladimir Putin, who is running for re-election later this month, declared in December that the Russian mission in Syria was largely completed, but casualties continue to mount. The aircraft was making its approach, when it abruptly lost altitude and collided into the ground 1600 feet short of the runway.

A Russian Air Force An-26 turboprop airlifter has crashed near the Khmeimim Air Base in Syria.

The latest accident comes after a Sukhoi military jet crashed while trying to take off from Hmeimim in October past year, killing two crew.

The Russian defence ministry says the An-26 crashed at about 15:00 Moscow Time (12:00 GMT).

A Russian investigative committee opened a criminal case after the crash in Syria.

The investigators also said Russian air strikes on a market in Atareb, west of Aleppo, killed at least 84 people last November.

Opinion polls indicate most Russians support the Syria intervention.

The deadly raids were the biggest direct clash between United States and Russian forces since the end of the Cold War.
