Read on for a selection of tributes to Craig Mack.

"I can not believe this dude is gone", said DJ Scratch, the stage name for George Spivey.

"I just got a disturbing phone call". I can not believe this dude is gone. He noted that Mack had worked as a roadie on his tours and had recently invited him to participate in his documentary. Alvin Toney, Mack's friend and producer of debut album Project: Funk Da World, says Mack was sick for some time, and tells the paper: "God bless my friend".

Mack was a protégé of Diddy, who signed him to his Bad Boy Entertainment record label.

Get Down, a follow-up track from his debut album, Project: Funk Da World, reached the top 20. The 1994 remix to the hit also was one the first times the world was introduced to Biggie Smalls.

Mack is survived by a wife and two children, both adults, Toney said.

Easy Mo Bee, who produced "Flava in Ya Ear" and numerous songs on Funk Da World, also shared a story about trying to get Mack back into hip-hop and the rapper's ties to Christianity.

Hip hop stars took to Twitter to mourn Mack's passing. The even-more-iconic "Flava In Ya Ear" remix, which came shortly afterward, helped launch the careers of the Notorious B.I.G. and Busta Rhymes, and its stark black-and-white video, which Hype Williams directed, is still copied today. "He wasn't scared. He was ready". "May the almighty embrace your soul & lift up your family and friends", rapper LL Cool J tweeted. You [stepped] away from the game & did it your way.

DJ Scratch said on Instagram that Mack formerly handled his turntable setups and breakdowns. "I always respected that.#RIPCraigMack".

Produced by Easy Mo Bee and originally intended for Flava Unit rapper Apache, "Flava in Ya Ear" would become one of the biggest rap hits of 1994, peaking at No. 9 on the Billboard Hot 100, earning platinum certification.
