Indian Wells: Federer sets personal record, advances to final

Indian Wells: Federer sets personal record, advances to final

Just past year, the two met four times: Federer claimed three of those matches, while Del Potro got the better of him in the quarter-finals of the US Open in four tight sets. Although Federer owns a 18-6 record against the 29-year-old in their FedEx ATP Head2Head series, Del Potro actually leads the Swiss when it comes to finals with three wins to Federer's two.

The Croat dropped just seven points on his serve as he became the first person in nine matches at Indian Wells to take a set off Federer.

"I had to move on with it and say that I was just happy to stay in the game".

"It didn't come easy, so I had to go get it".

"I love to play against him", the Argentinian said. "I can see why he caused a lot of problems to a lot of players, and he's only going to improve from here".

The five-time champion will now face Argentina's Juan Martin del Potro in the final after the 6bth seed defeated Canada's Milos Raonic in straight sets, 6-2 6-3. If you look back at how many close calls we had in the important moments, things could have shifted either way for both of us. "At the end, he just got through". 'I think when you are confident and maybe also experienced and you have that combination, there's no real need to panic because you can assess the situation quite easily.

"I should have lost the match", Federer stated.

Coric broke Federer's serve in the opening game of the second set but Federer forced his way back in before a long forehand from Coric handed him the set.

In the third set he fell behind again 4-3 but won the final 11 points of the match to claim the victory. Federer struggled to find rhythm in the earlier stages of the match. The ball was called out but Coric challenged and after the video review the original call was confirmed.

I should have lost the match. "Those 10 minutes when I was down a set and a break it was hard for me to accept. It was a good match".

Juan Martin del Potro is fresh off of a semifinals win over Canadian tennis star Milos Raonic. "That gave me the control of the match".

The last time del Potro and Federer played was past year in the Basel final where the latter won 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 6-3.

Federer said he is expecting another gruelling war of attrition with the Argentinian. "Big matches, close matches", he said. Over that period of time it has been Del Potro who has caused him the most trouble.

"He's the favourite to win tomorrow", Del Potro said.
