Gareth Southgate says Boris Johnson's views not his concern

Gareth Southgate says Boris Johnson's views not his concern

I call the team together and remind them we must be good ambassadors for England if we get to Russian Federation.

The Three Lions came out firing in the second half and eventually broke the deadlock in the 59th minute courtesy of a composed finish from Lingard. "At times a little more quality in the final third was needed".

But the a few seeds of hope were sown in the Amsterdam Arena last night that, given careful nurturing over the next three months, could just have time to take root and turn Gareth Southgate's worldwide saplings into something more resilient.

"I think we know about all the leaders in the group", Southgate said.

It took the visitors an hour to break the deadlock, but Lingard eventually got his first worldwide goal with a curled effort Zoet perhaps should have dealt with.

England host Italy on Tuesday night at Wembley, which will give Southgate another chance to experiment with his available options.

"His last three matches for us have been outstanding and he's really unfortunate to be out of the City team", he said.

With Kane missing, Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson led his team, while his club teammate Virgil van Dijk wore the Dutch captain's armband for the first time in his global career. "It's nothing too serious", Southgate said. "They enjoyed the ball".

Joe Gomez and Kyle Walker, who have played in that position with their clubs lately, were yoked together in a back three with John Stones, another who spent most of his early career as a right-back.

Jordan Pickford, auditioning for the No.1 job, comfortably dealt with a long-range Matthijs de Ligt strike at the other end before smartly coming off his line to thwart Quincy Promes, but there was not a whole lot for the Everton goalkeeper to do.

Skipper Jordan Henderson had gone close in a relatively tame first half, but his header bounced narrowly wide.

Zoet had a fine first half and made an excellent save to deny Raheem Sterling, preserving his clean sheet.

Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere will miss England's friendly against Netherlands in Amsterdam on Friday with a tendon problem.

"I heard some of the booing of the anthem which obviously isn't acceptable", Southgate told a post-match press conference later.

"Our players have represented their country really well tonight, with pride and with some style, so anything else that takes away from that performance for them would be a great shame".
