Lakers' Isaiah Thomas set to undergo hip surgery

Lakers' Isaiah Thomas set to undergo hip surgery

The Los Angeles Lakers announced Wednesday that Thomas would undergo the next day an arthroscopic procedure on his right hip, the same hip he originally injured just over a year ago - and decided, with the advice of doctors in Boston, not to have surgically mended.

Thomas has not played for the Lakers since March 22 due to pain in his hip that was not subsiding.

Thomas, who is in the final year of a $27million deal he signed in 2014, averaged 15.2 points and 4.8 assists with 3.0 turnovers per contest through 32 games with the Lakers and the Cavs this season.

In a statement received by ESPN on Isaiah Thomas, Dr. Bryan Kelly of the Hospital for Special Surgery in NYC says: "We will be doing a minimally invasive procedure to "clean up" the joint of all inflammatory debris related to his injury from last season".

The Lakers are expected to try and lure such free agents as LeBron James and Paul George to Los Angeles, leaving the future uncertain for Thomas in any case.

Thomas' season is over. He was traded to the Cavaliers over the summer in a deal that sent Kyrie Irving to Boston.

The Lakers are reportedly interested in bringing Isaiah Thomas back next season. He played a key leadership role despite starting only one game and playing a backup's role for only the second time in his career. Walton felt he's had a positive impact on the younger players, according to ESPN.

"The team's agenda always came first, and he never complained about it once", Walton said Wednesday. "Him and Julius had a good connection going". He was great. You could go down the line.

"He has been a really good leader for us", Ingram said. He cleared concussion protocol and was available to play against the Mavericks.
