Suspect in killing of Yarmouth K-9 officer held on murder charge

A MA police officer was reportedly shot and killed Thursday while serving a search warrant to a man with an extensive criminal history.

Latanowich was charged with one count of murder and one count of mistreating a police dog.

Friday night, Xiarhos said Nero "has survived emergency surgery and is being treated and taken care of by the best medical staff in New England at a location here on Cape Cod".

State police say Gannon's police dog was injured.

Gannon was 32 and had been with the Yarmouth police for 8 years. "Sean was a wonderful, wonderful young man".

Police Chief Frank Frederickson said Gannon's death is hard for members of his department to comprehend. "He died doing what he loved". We're going to miss him terribly.

An eight-year veteran of the force, Gannon was married and a graduate of both Bishop Stang High School in Dartmouth and Westfield State University.

"Sean was a talented and dedicated police officer who excelled during his three years at the College", said Stonehill spokesperson Martin McGovern. Baker also ordered all US and state flags on state buildings lowered to half-staff in honor of the fallen officer.

Cape and Islands District Attorney Michael O'Keefe was asked if Latanowich's past crimes were adequately punished. Numerous charges were later dismissed. The prosecutor expressed frustration that prior charges had not resulted in more lengthy sentences.

Latanowich is expected back in court in June.
