John Oliver bought Russell Crowe's jockstrap for the last Blockbuster in Alaska

John Oliver bought Russell Crowe's jockstrap for the last Blockbuster in Alaska

The mystery $7,000 bid for the jockstrap worn by actor Russell Crowe in Cinderella Man sold during the actor's "Art of Divorce" auction went to British satirist and US TV host John Oliver. Oliver said he had made a decision to donate them to his current cause celebre - Anchorage's last-remaining Blockbuster video store. "Just call us in the next 48 hours, and we'll send it to you".

"If only there were a fun, movie-themed way for them to draw people in", Oliver muses, adding that Planet Hollywood lets people dine with precious movie artifacts.

"[It was] a big price to pay just to find out what Russell Crowe's balls smelled like in 2005", Oliver joked.

Daymude says he is not sure what he did for his store - one of three Blockbusters still open in the state - to get the memorabilia, but he is thrilled for the offer.

John Oliver is determined to save Blockbuster - by using Russell Crowe memorabilia!

"There has been some speculation out there that we were the ones who bought that jockstrap - and I will admit it does sound like something that we would do".

Titled The Art of Divorce, Crowe's auction, which raised almost $4m, took place on the actor's 54th birthday and the anniversary of his wedding to singer Danielle Spencer in 2003. The bad news is, we didn't do it.

Oliver chalks it up to the allure of late-night online shopping, proceeding to walking the crowd through their purchases. The winnings also included the set chairs of Crowe (and, for some reason, Denzel Washington) from their time on American Gangster, as well as the vest Crowe wore in the film Les Miserables, and a hood Crowe wore in Robin Hood.

"It was my jock strap when I won the heavyweight championship of the world as the character James J. Braddock in the film 'Cinderella Man, '" Crowe told Good Morning Britain.
