Local students to join National School Walkout, set for Friday

"The April 20 walkout as now promoted is a disruption to the school day, and a violation of the student code of conduct - which will be enforced".

In a counter move on Friday, Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach, a Republican, has planned a gun rights rally at the Statehouse in Topeka.

State College Area School District spokesman Chris Rosenblum said students will face detention if they walk out of class on Friday.

-Marion County Public School spokesperson " This is a student led event and each Volusia high school has a plan based on their students' interest in participating. There have been 33 school shootings in California since Columbine, resulting in 51 deaths and 136 injuries.

"We are aware that some students may be planning to participate in a walk out on Friday", New Hanover County Schools spokesperson Valita Quattlebaum said.

This latest national rally comes more than a month after tens of thousands of US students from more than 3,000 schools participated in the #ENOUGH National School Walkout to demand that lawmakers seek tighter gun control regulations.

Area schools and thousands across the country will take part in a walkout, demanding tougher gun laws and safer schools. Student activists across the country-newly motivated by February's attack in Parkland, Florida, that killed 17 people- will mark the occasion by again pressing for stricter gun legislation. In Kansas City, police estimated the crowd reached 5,000 to 6,000 at its peak. Head organizers listed on the page are generally students.

"I've been so inspired by the MSD students, they are the leaders and the heroes of our generation", said Murdock, who's been getting some help from Change.org and Indivisible, a grass-roots resistance organization. "We need to let them know that for us this is less of a political issue and more of a human issue". Students walked out of class on March 14, and events were held during March 24 March for Our Lives rallies.

Our schools are encouraging students to remain focused on learning while knowing that the School Board has been and continues to keep student safety as a top priority.

Using a GoFundMe account, students raised more than $1,200 to pay for the event.

Local students are preparing for a peaceful protest Thursday. Students will perform music and poetry starting at noon. Those students will not be considered truant. Others said they will participate in activities organized by the school to honor the victims of the Colorado high school shooting that killed 12 students and one teacher in 1999.
