Some British republicans had hoped Mr Turnbull, a well-known high-profile advocate of installing an Australian head of state, would campaign against a Royal being put in the head of Commonwealth role.

Britain's Prince Charles was approved as the successor to Queen Elizabeth as head of the Commonwealth at a meeting of the group's heads of government in Windsor yesterday, Sky News reported, citing unnamed sources. It is not automatically passed on when the Queen dies.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also gave his support to Prince Charles earlier this week.

The Commonwealth head role is non-hereditary.

"It is my honest wish that the Commonwealth will continue to offer stability and continuity for future generations and will decide that one day the Prince of Wales should carry on the important work started by my father in 1949", the 92-year-old said on Thursday during the formal opening of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting at Buckingham Palace.

The position is largely symbolic, but the queen's commitment has been a major force behind the survival of the Commonwealth.

The biennial meeting, taking place in Britain for the first time in 20 years, could be the last attended by Queen Elizabeth, who turns 92 today, as she cuts back on some of her official duties.

Charles is a longtime champion of environmental causes, a priority for the Commonwealth. Its members include small island nations in the Caribbean and Pacific that are among the countries most vulnerable to rising seas, fiercer storms and other effects of global climate change.

The President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, says one of the important aspects of Queen Elizabeth II's reign, as Queen of the United Kingdom and Head of the Commonwealth, has been the transformation of the Commonwealth.

As Queen Elizabeth's first born, Charles is expected to inherit the throne upon her death.

"It remains a great pleasure and honour to serve you as head of the Commonwealth and to observe with pride and satisfaction that this is a flourishing network", she said.

The next summit is due to be held in Malaysia in 2020. The Commonwealth also makes up 1/4th of the world's territory.

"It is my honest wish that the Commonwealth will continue to offer stability and continuity for future generations, and will decide that one day the Prince of Wales should carry on the important work started by my father in 1949". In 2017, 44 percent of British exports went to the European Union and just 9 percent to Commonwealth countries.

In a statement following their meeting in Windsor city in western London, leaders of the Commonwealth said they recognize the role of Queen Elizabeth II in supporting the Commonwealth and its people.
