ME officer shot and killed responding to robbery

A sheriff's deputy in ME was shot and killed early this morning in the town of Norridgwock.

John Williams, 29, of Madison, who is wanted for the death of Cole, remains at large and should be considered armed and unsafe.

Somerset County Cpl Sheriff Eugene Cole was killed at about 1:45 am April 25 on US Route 2 in Norridgewock about 60 miles west of Bangor, state police said.

Williams is described as 5 feet, 6 inches, 120 pounds, with brown hair shaved on the sides of his head.

Police in Maine have launched an intensive manhunt in Norridgewock, a heavily wooded rural town in central Maine, for 29-year-old John Williams of Madison, Maine.

Cole later told Maine Public radio that de-escalation is a basic tactic for police in unsafe situations and that they are always aware that their own lives may be at risk.

State police said that Somerset County Cpl. Schools in Oakland, Norridgewock and Fairfield were all on lockdown Wednesday as the manhunt continued.

Williams had been scheduled to be at Haverhill District Court in MA on Wednesday morning for a probable cause hearing related to his arrest in that state March 22 on suspicion of having a gun without a license, said Carrie Kimball-Monahan, spokeswoman for the Essex district attorney's office. At the time he was arrested his bail was set at $10,000. He was due back in court today.

"Eugene was one hell of a guitar player", says longtime friend Scott Bishop of Madison. Bishop says Williams was not very sociable but would say hello.

"Our deepest condolences go out to the family of fallen Deputy Sheriff Corporal Eugene Cole", Maine Governor Paul LePage said in a tweeted statement. The last ME law enforcement officer to be shot and killed was Giles Landry in March of 1989. Gov. LePage ordered flags to be lowered to half-staff for at least three days in honor of Cole. Landry, a state police trooper, was responding to a domestic dispute call. Desjardins was on his first day of water rescue training.

Cole is the first ME law enforcement officer to die in the line of duty since 2011.
