Gerrard admits to holding 'positive talks' with Rangers

I've held initial talks with Rangers, and the plan is to pick them up again in a couple of days' time.

"If they get Steven Gerrard in, they are going to have to back him and back him heavily and I mean a few million pounds to get that foundation and try to claw back Celtic".

The discussions will resume tomorrow when Gerrard has completed his Champions League semi-final punditry duties.

And Rodgers is adamant Murty has been treated "discourteously" by Rangers after he stepped up to the top job for a second time following the sacking of Pedro Caixinha and the failure to land Aberdeen's Derek McInnes.

Rangers have sacked Graeme Murty two days after a 5-0 hammering by their bitter rivals Celtic.

Gerrard has always expressed an interest in becoming a manager and after a year as Liverpool U18s coach he clearly feels ready.

Assistant coaches Jimmy Nicholl and Jonatan Johansson have been put in temporary charge for Saturday's home game with Kilmarnock.

The Rangers caretaker boss has since parted company with the club and according to the Daily Star, Gerard will take up the managerial role on a three year deal.

"Graeme has had to contend with hard and challenging circumstances but conducted himself in a thoroughly professional manner".

And Gerrard is likely to press the Rangers board over the finances available to him should he take over a club who are third in the Premiership and level on points with fourth-placed Hibernian.

"The club hopes to be in a position to comment further on the managerial situation in the near future".

The Daily Star add that friends close to Gerrard say the former midfielder could not turn down the offer of managing Rangers.

"It is going to be a big one but I think he could be the one who could hopefully change the fortunes", he told BBC Sport.
