Explosion during 'domestic' hostage situation in CT injures 6 officers (PHOTOS, VIDEO)

An explosion at a CT house where police and SWAT officers were engaged in a standoff with a barricaded suspect caused a large fire and left several people injured, according to accounts from the scene.

A barn behind a house in CT exploded Wednesday night while police and a SWAT team were negotiating with a man who had taken his wife hostage, leaving nine people including at least eight officers injured, officials said.

One WFSB-TV reporter caught video of two people being taken away in handcuffs, but it's unclear what connection they may have to Wednesday night's explosion.

"It sounds nearly like it was a booby trap type of explosion", Freda said.

Law enforcement responded to a domestic violence call at a home on the 300 block of Quinnipiac Avenue in North Haven, Connecticut on May 2. Authorities were trying to negotiate with a man who was holding his wife hostage.

The roads surrounding the residence remain closed off. Additional officers and firefighters arrived on the scene to get the blaze under control.

He said the officers, who suffered non-life-threatening injuries, were taken to Yale New Haven Hospital, but their exact conditions weren't immediately known, the station reported. According to reports, she filed for divorce last month.

Police and SWAT were called to a home on a call that a man had barricaded himself inside, ABC News reports.

Residents near the home reported on the police department's Facebook page that they heard the explosion and felt their own homes shake around 8:30 p.m.

The explosion happened Wednesday night in North Haven.

State police say they are assisting with the investigation.
