Chris Froome crashes in warm-up, then loses 37 seconds to Tom Dumoulin

The cyclists passed Israel's parliament, Supreme Court, the Israel Museum and the Hebrew University on their route through the city.

Dumoulin and Froome failed to face off in any of last year's Grand Tours as Dumoulin skipped the last two of 2017, while Froome didn't race in the Giro, which the Dutchman won.

I got four laps of the pretty technical and undulating time trial course done this morning before heading back to the hotel for lunch at noon, only to be told that they weren't serving lunch. "It was all about full-gas and recovery - it was ideal for me".

"It's nice to be in the Maglia Rosa but it will be hard to keep it for three weeks", said Dumoulin. We will see what happens over the next days but we're not going to defend it with everything we have. In fact, it wasn't until the very last rider, defending champion Tom Dumoulin, crossed the line a mere two seconds faster that he was ousted, which must have been very disappointing for him. "It's a bit too long for my taste and it will be a hot day, but I'll try to do my best". "There was nothing I could do better today".

Froome, however, will be desperate to wrest back control of this race by then and he will get chances to do so, with five of the Giro's eight mountain-top finishes coming before that 16th stage, but he will need to show much better form than he displayed here.

"I just lost the front wheel in a corner". I say "looks lovely" because while I'd have no hesitation scoffing down new delicacies on holidays, I've mainly stuck to the staples ahead of today's race start for fear of upsetting my stomach.

"This is all I wished, the win and quite a lot of time on the other GC riders", Dumoulin said. Also down while on a recon of the course was Kanstantstin Siutsou (Bahrain-Merida) who was reported to have broken his collarbone. "I didn't know why I would win or why it was cool to race my bike, I was just living with the result", said the Sunweb team leader.

"Let's see first how the first two stages, in Tel Aviv and Eilat will unfold, and afterwards we can start thinking of this".

A rest day will follow, where the riders with transfer to Italy for the resumption of the race. The Giro will end in Rome on 27 May.
