Former Manchester United boss has emergency surgery

Sir Alex appeared on the pitch at Old Trafford a week ago to present outgoing Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger - his long-time rival - with a trophy recognising his career.

There were concerns on Saturday afternoon when his son Darren Ferguson missed Doncaster's final game of the season against Wigan due to "family reasons".

Liverpool FC hailed Sir Alex as a "great rival but also a great friend" and it hoped for his "full recovery".

A manager who won many titles in his career.

Southampton manager Mark Hughes, who made his name in football as a United striker during the early years of Ferguson's time at Old Trafford, said: "I only just got a little whisper earlier on".

The club said on Saturday night that the surgery had gone "very well" but that Ferguson would need a period of intensive care to aid his recovery. "Be strong, Boss!" Ronaldo tweeted.

Ferguson has been married to wife Cathy since 1966.

But before that he had transformed Scottish side Aberdeen to challenge the dominant Glasgow sides of Rangers and Celtic in the 1980s.

Success did not come immediately, and football folklore has it that Ferguson was almost shown the door himself before an FA Cup triumph in 1990 paved the way for an unprecedented two decades of glory.

Television presenter Eamonn Holmes, a longtime friend of the football hero and Manchester United fan, described him as an "amazing man".

United ended a 26-year wait for the league title by triumphing in the inaugural season of the Premier League in 1992-93, before claiming their first ever league and FA Cup double the following year. "Hoping the great man does what he does best and wins this challenge", he added.

"We wish him all the best and that he recovers quickly".

Former United player David Beckham posted a picture on Instagram of himself as a fresh-faced schoolboy with Sir Alex, writing: "Keep fighting Boss".

"All my thoughts and prayers are with him and his family".

Mike Phelan, who was Ferguson's assistant for five years: You've won more than most and if anyone can, you can boss.

"Gutted to hear the news tonight about Sir Alex". All my thoughts and prayers are with him and his family.

FC Barcelona too wishes a speedy recovery for Sir Alex.

News that he had been rushed to hospital produced a wave of support for him on social media. The former United boss is a indestructible personality in the footballing world and a legend of the game.

"In the meantime, the club will offer its full support to Manchester United and also his family".
