Minor girl gangraped, burnt alive in Chatra

The assailant then waited until the girl was alone, "then broke into her house and raped her before setting her alight", according to the BBC.

Deputy commissioner of the Chatra District, Jitendra Kumar Singh, said that the 15 of the 20 men accused have been arrested and taken into custody while the investigation continues.

Her parents reported the crime to the local village council who chose to impose a $750 fine (50,000 rupees) and 100 situps to each of the perpetrators.

One of the relatives of the victim told media, "The Panchayat asked to settle the matter by making the accused do 100 sit-ups and paying the victim's family Rs. 50,000".

Enraged over the panchayat's decision, all the accused men went to the house of the girl and thrashed the family members and burnt her to death.

A group of 14 men have been arrested in India in connection with the alleged kidnap, rape, and killing of a 16-year-old girl, the Independent reports. Senior police and district administration officials have reached Rajakendua village to take stock of the situation and meet the victim's family.

The rape and murder of eight-year-old Asifa Bano, in Bangalore, last month sparked rallies across the country as women demanded an end to sexual violence. The accused was sent to jail after a case was registered against him under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

Fifteen people have been detained in the case of the 16-year-old, who was torched to death in the state's Chatra district.

In late April, the Indian government has approved the introduction of the death penalty for the rape of children under the age of 12 years.

Jharkhand chief minister Raghubar Das said he was shocked by the gruesome incident and called for stringent action against the culprits.

In India, rape has become a menace and such horrific incidents keep coming forward way too frequently.

There were 40,000 rape cases reported in India in 2016, the most recent year in which data is available.
