MLB London Series Set for June 2019

MLB London Series Set for June 2019

The teams will play Major League Baseball's first games in England on June 29 and 30, 2019, at the stadium that was created to host the 2012 Olympics.

London's Olympic Stadium may not have been deemed suitable to host any Cricket World Cup matches next summer, but the venue holds no such concerns for Major League Baseball, which has confirmed it will stage two matches between the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox next summer.

It will be the first time a Sox-Yankees game will be played somewhere other than Boston or NY.

The plan is to host the London Series again in 2020, in order to establish a "long-term footprint in the city". MLB, which has previously staged regular-season contests in Puerto Rico, Mexico, Japan and Australia, will return to London for another series in 2020, with the participating teams yet to.

"Major League Baseball is excited to be bringing one of the most storied rivalries in sports to the passionate fans of London", said Manfred.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan hailed the "historic agreement".

"All the hard work has paid off", said Khan, describing it as an "historic" partnership.

Major League Baseball will make its first foray into Europe next season with the biggest possible splash: by showcasing the sport's heavyweights. But two of the best hitting teams in baseball may find at least one thing to their liking: the dimensions of London Stadium. "I can't wait to hear someone shout "play ball" at London Stadium".

Baseball is following in the footsteps of American football, which has regularly held NFL games in London since 2007, and basketball, with NBA matches having become a regular fixture in the capital since 2011.
