A man and a young boy have been critically injured in a plane crash in Co Offaly.

They were taken to Tullamore Regional Hospital where post mortem examinations will be carried out later today.

The plane had taken off from Clonbullogue airfield at around 2.25pm.

All 16 made their jump from the craft prior to any accidents happening, however witnesses then stated that they saw the aircraft crash shortly afterwards.

However, a short time later the plane was seen flying low to the ground before there was a "terrible roar" and it crashed "straight down like a torpedo".

The crashed plane had been partially submerged in water on the bog and required an exhaustive recovery mission. "A rescue/recovery operation is under way".

In the crash of a light aircraft in Ireland killed the pilot of the aircraft and seven-year-old child, reports The Mirror.

Local councillor Eddie Fitzpatrick said the airfield had a long established reputation for parachuting.

"The Irish Parachute Club is over 20 years in Edenderry and run to the highest standards, so it was a big shock to hear of an accident of this type", he said. Gardai said there is no confirmation of any deaths at this point in time.
