The press conference opened up with something pretty big - a new Pokemon game available for Nintendo Switch and smartphones.

Although we were initially skeptical about the announcement, after consulting a few Pokemon franchise veterans and a few fellow gaming journalists, we are inclined to believe that this announcement will reference Pokemon GO in a number of ways.

The games are spiritual successors to Pokemon Yellow, the Game Boy title from 1998, with a dash of Pokemon Go thrown in.

"As developers of Pokemon games, we had a strong feeling and responsibility of trying to our hand at the new Switch hardware and make it succeed", said Tsunekazu Ishihara, chief executive officer of Pokemon Co.

Pokemon: Let's Go Pikachu! and Pokemon: Let's Go Eevee! are set to appear on 16 November, while Pokemon Quest is available on the Nintendo eShop today; with the mobile version coming in late June.

Rumours had suggested we would get more information on the new pair of games this week, ahead of E3, and it's sounding a lot like that part of the rumours may be true. You can use it like a Joy Con to control your Switch, or use it to search for Pokemon on the go without opening your phone.

The second Nintendo Switch game, as previously mentioned, is Pokemon Quest, a "free to start" game developed by core-RPG studio Game Freak. Players will be able to customize a party of up to three Pokemon with special items called Power Stones, which influence your party attributes.

Offering games that straddle both devices should help lure more consumers into the Switch ecosystem, where monetization is easier than freemium mobile offerings like the original Pokemon Go.
