Warriors withstand James’s 51 points to win Game 1 of NBA finals

The night was a historic one for James, who is the only player other than Michael Jordan to score more than 50 points in a Finals game since 1970. A star point guard and true difference-maker, Irving had played a huge role in each of the Cavaliers' last two Finals appearances.

Cavaliers point guard George Hill was fouled in the bonus, sending him to the free-throw line with his team down 107-106 with 4.7 seconds left.

"There were some plays that we had taken away from us", James said. The clock expired and the game went into overtime.

Despite Smith's blunder, he was offered some sympathy by his teammates following the game.

JR Smith of the Cleveland Cavaliers is a multi-millionaire basketball player with a championship to his name, but no one from the viewer fanbase would want to step in his shoes, especially right now.

The Warriors (58-24 for the season) dominated the extra period, outscoring the Cavaliers 17-7 behind timely buckets from Shaun Livingston, Klay Thompson and Curry.

Hill made the first free throw but missed the second.

"It's never been done before where you know he's outside the restricted, and then you go there and overturn the call and say it's a block". "And when I knew that, I was like, OK, that's going to be our ball".

James would end the night with 51 points on just 32 shots, a line made fuller by his eight rebounds and eight assists.

"I knew once it was 30 seconds to go that they could review that situation", Durant said.

"To do what he did tonight and come out robbed, it's just not right", Lue said.

"The reason for the trigger is that we had doubt as to whether or not James was in the restricted area", Mauer said following the game.

At the 1:05 mark, Nichols asked LeBron whether he ever sized up the odds stacked against the Cavs and allowed himself to think, I'm not going to make it to the Finals this year.

"The blocked charge thing, a year ago in the regular season same play happened to me", Durant said. Durant pitched in 26, but was just 8-22 from the field and only scored five points after the third quarter.

Thompson lay grimacing in pain then went to the locker room with what was called a bruised left leg that needed re-taping.

Kevin Love returned from a concussion to provide a big boost for Cleveland with 21 points and 13 rebounds.

The Cleveland Cavaliers' road to their fourth consecutive NBA Finals appearance was mired in uncertainty.

Draymond, Steve Kerr said the win, in his opinion, because of the J.R. play, was lucky, in his words.

"It was a insane game", Curry said.
