Warner Bros. Still Developing Joker Origin Movie From Todd Phillips

Warner Bros.is working on a standalone movie focusing on the 46-year-old actor's villainous character, Variety reports.

The studio is reportedly planning to expand the universe established in Ayer's film by creating standalone movies on its characters. Leto, meanwhile, had little more than a cameo role as Joker in the poorly received Suicide Squad. This is not to mention The Batman which may or may not have Ben Affleck in it, and could easily have the Joker as well, though it looks more likely it'll be the Penguin.

Jared Leto's version of the Joker in Suicide Squad was polarizing to say the least.

Joaquin Phoenix was tapped to play the lead; however Warner insisted Leto's version was not being scrapped. But one thing is for certain: two Joker movies are now being lined up. One movie will be the origin story, while Jared Leto's will focus on the partly established character that we saw glimpses of during Suicide Squad. Much like how Warner Bros. stressed previous year that that film did not mean Leto was out as the Clown Prince of Crime in the DCU, it would seem Phillips' film isn't off the table either. Yet.

There is a so-called "R-rated girl gang" movie in the pipeline, Birds of Prey, centred around Robbie's Harley Quinn. Every time the actor is asked about the subject of the origin movie, he claims to not know anything about it, but has said numerous times that it sounds "very interesting".

One of the - many - overwhelming criticisms of the movie was Leto's lacklustre Joker, which, though little more than a glorified cameo, didn't quite measure up to the weird tales from the movie's set. All six - yes, you read that correctly - six of them.
