Kate Spade's husband says she suffered from depression

The fashion designer was tragically found dead by her housekeeper at her Park Avenue apartment on Tuesday at the age of 55.

Andy Spade, spouse and business associate of the acclaimed designer for the last 24 years, says his wife had been seeking professional help for her mental health issues.

He stressed that Kate had not been abusing any substances or alcohol, nor had there been any business problems. We loved creating our businesses together. "We were co-parenting our handsome daughter".

"I am appalled that a private message to my daughter has been so heartlessly shared with the media", he said. But they were committed to co-parenting their daughter, so they often ate meals together and vacationed as a family, he said.

He also says the two had been living separately, but had not discussed divorce. He added that they were working on their marriage and tried to make things as normal as possible for their 13-year-old daughter Frances Beatrix. "We loved each other very much and simply needed a break". "She was actively seeking help for depression and anxiety over the last 5 years, seeing a doctor on a regular basis and taking medication for both depression and anxiety".

Cariaga was so proud she posted several images on her social media and a photo of the day her Frances Valentine package arrived from Spade in 2016.

"We are all devastated by today's tragedy", the Spade family said in a statement provided to The New York Times.

Also speaking out about the tragedy was actor and comedian David Spade, who is Andy Spade's brother.

Kate Spade's final conversation with her sister was not necessarily a happy one.

"She was a great talent who had an immeasurable impact on American fashion and the way the world viewed American accessories", they said.

Kate sold her original company in 2007 and took some time off to raise her daughter, Frances Valentine but announced her return to fashion with a brand affectionately named after her little girl. "At the time, bags were too complicated, and I really loved very simple kind of architectural shapes", Spade said past year on the NPR show "How I Built This with Guy Raz". Although he said he and his sister often spoke several times a day, it sometimes became hard to get her on the phone.

Kate's husband explained that he is now focused on protecting his daughter's privacy as he and her both struggle with the loss of her mother.

"We were best friends trying to work through our problems in the best way we knew how", Andy Spade said.
