Trump threatens to ‘terminate NAFTA’ if there isn’t a new deal

Finance Minister Bill Morneau said that message was communicated clearly to Trump during his meetings at the G7 summit with fellow leaders, and in his face-to-face talk with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

"Very dishonest & weak", Trump said, adding that recently imposed USA tariffs on imports of Canadian steel and aluminum were in response to similar measures imposed on American dairy products by Canada.

Before heading off to La Malbaie, in Ottawa, Macron and Trudeau offered an olive branch of sorts by offering Trump a modest measure of support in his historic meeting in Singapore with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un following the G7 summit.

White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said Deputy Assistant to the President for International Economic Affairs Everett Eissenstat, will represent the United States for the G7 sessions that Trump will skip Saturday.

Trudeau said he told Trump directly that Canada 'particularly did not take lightly the fact that [the tariffs were] based on a national security reason'.

The joint statement signed by US President Donald Trump and his counterparts comes amid a row over high US tariffs imposed this month on steel and aluminium imports.

At what a French described as one "extraordinary" session on Friday, leaders who had vowed to confront Trump over his decision to impose tariffs on USA allies last week as part of his "America First" agenda, showered Trump with data one after the other.

After a meeting with President Trump, French President Emmanuel Macron said last night that he believes when it comes to trade there is a way to progress together.

Mr Trump and G7 leaders had a bitter exchange over trade tariffs, ratcheting tensions at the summit.

Morneau said the tariff retaliation would cause "increasing friction" that would impede progress on NAFTA, but added there is a need "to step back from that destructive action so that we can actually get to the real work". But I feel really confident", Trump said of Monday's meeting, which is the first between a North Korean leader and sitting USA president, "It's never been done, It's never been tested. Russian Federation was expelled from the group - which now includes France, Canada, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the USA - following its annexation of Crimea in 2014.

Trump planned to leave the summit on Saturday before it discussed climate change and the health of oceans, underlining fractures in the G7 exacerbated by the tariffs.

If leaders were "cordial" with Trump he may have taken it the wrong way.

Pierre Lampron, the president of Dairy Farmers of Canada, shot back at Trump's claims about his industry.

The American leader said a three-country deal would only be possible with substantial changes, and reiterated his interest instead in forming separate two-way trade accords with Mexico and Canada - an interest Canada has made clear it does not share.

He later said that Russia's return to the group would be "an asset" and that it would be a good move for peace in the world.
