The sergeant pulled over and parked his squad auto to block traffic in the lane.

It was a heart-stopping moment as Sgt. Anthony Mannino, a 24-year veteran of the Naperville Police Department, saw the boy wandering onto Route 59, just inches away from speeding traffic.

"I have twin boys, and there's not a day that goes by where something bad happens, you always think of your own kids", Mannino said. The 1-year-old was running alongside traffic, including large trucks whizzing by at unsafe speeds.

A heroic police officer rescued a child wandering in the middle of a highway in IL.

"Come here!" Mannino shouts as he runs and catches up to the little boy. In dashcam footage of the rescue, Mannino is seen running after the child before carrying it back to his cruiser.

Mannino was presented his department's lifesaving award on Thursday, the department said.

Officers later learned that the child "escaped his mother's watchful eye" and left his home, according to police. Police ruled the incident an accident.
