B-John D. Gunther (KY).

Justify became the 13th horse to land the US Triple Crown at Belmont, in NY, on Saturday night when the Bob Baffert-trained colt ran out a comfortable victor of the Belmont Stakes to add to victories in the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes. The majestic chestnut colt was bred at Glennwood Farm in Versailles, Ky., which is owned by Gunther and run by his daughter, Tanya.

Post time for Saturday's big event from Belmont Park (New York City) is slated for 6:37 p.m. EST. "Everybody was in tears, including myself". So any horse that wins all three passes a threshold of speed, strength, and just plain grit. We thought he was that kind of horse, but he had to prove it, and he did. Gunther's daughter Tanya selected Justify's sire, Scat Daddy. Gunther credits his daughter's encyclopedic understanding of blood-lines for creating the champion thoroughbred. "We've been able to brand something very special in what we've accomplished".

In sweeping the Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont, Smith becomes the oldest jockey to win the Triple Crown.

An impressive feat for Baffert, racing's affable, most marketable two-legged star, for sure.

Behind him horses diced for position.

Draped in red and white, Justify got off to a good start, grabbing the early lead and setting a fast pace. Before Justify, it hadn't been done by a horse who didn't run at 2 and made only six starts in such a short time.

On Saturday, he joined Seattle Slew (1977) as the only other Triple Crown victor with an undefeated record.

Justify is now the 13th horse to win the greatest honor of horse-racing, and only the second since 1998.

Justify's pedigree features plenty of Canadian content. Seattle Slew was unbeaten when he won the Triple Crown in 1977.

The season-ending Breeders' Cup world championships are in Louisville on November 2-3. He didn't compete as a 2-year-old.

Justify was sold as a yearling for $500,000 in 2016. Vino Rosso is 17/2 to win the Belmont Stakes this evening. "But if you win the Triple Crown you become a legend and that is what he is now". Gunther said. "But you've got to keep doing it just to try it again". We're just so proud of him.

After winning the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness, Justify enters the third leg of the Triple Crown as the heavy favorite.

Justify, jockeyed by Mike Smith, became a sensation because of his impressive size, his calm and dominating presence, and his ability to overcome inexperience.

"It's like climbing Mt. Everest", Gunther said.

"The whole time he was so professional", Smith said of Justify after the race. But Gunther opted to follow his gut with this decision, which came long before Justify's emergence as a champion racehorse. "I'm not. I've had really good luck there".

"On Saturday, I couldn't believe how he walked into the paddock". He reversed The Curse of Apollo, who in 1882 had been the last Derby victor who hadn't raced at 2.

Gunther said he's now eyeing the future, looking at breeding plans for Justify's mother. But if Baffert prefers to keep the horse out West, the Pacific Classic on August 18 at Del Mar might be an appealing target.

Justify is taking on nine rivals, the largest number that a potential Triple Crown victor has ever faced.

"No more pressure", Gunther said.
