France awarded penalty in first VAR overrule at World Cup

The man sat in France's dugout knows a thing or two about winning a World Cup.

Remarkably, a previously bad game exploded into life when Australia promptly went down the other end and won a penalty of their own - scored by Mile Jedinak.

The "job got done", reflected Deschamps.

He fielded experienced Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud with the substitutes team in training on Wednesday, suggesting explosive 19-year-old Kylian Mbappe and Barcelona winger Ousmane Dembele could form a powerful trio with Antoine Griezmann. "He's a very ambitious player but in the locker room, the (team) bus and the base camp, he was happy", said France left-back Lucas Hernandez, who also plays for Atletico. The last four weeks we worked so that I was confident in his team.

"We're expecting him to get the crowd on their feet".

Stellar French only in the end of the match snatched victory over Australia.

"I think we lacked some speed in the passes and we don't push forward and move backward very quickly", the French coach said during the post-match press conference.

Dutchman Van Marwijk, meanwhile, has had only a handful of games to imprint his gameplan on the group's lowest-ranked side.

"Australia might not be a top European side but we can't say they don't have some quality".

In their World Cup 2018 debut, "Les Bleus" would've been grateful to the VAR system, as not only was Griezmann's penalty awarded after officials replayed the footage, but Paul Pogba's goal required VAR to confirm that the ball had gone over the line.

Frank Leboeuf joins the ESPN FC crew to talk about France's underwhelming display and what must be done to play to their potential. "They are a well organised team, physically strong and we'll need to find a way to counteract that". Peru will be stronger than Australia and we will have to be ready and Denmark will be stronger than Peru too.

Giroud made the decisive pass that led to Pogba's late victor, and Matuidi helped France recover the ball higher on the pitch and accelerate play with his neat one-touch football.

'Yes, I speak with Dybala, but whether I speak to Dybala or speak with Umtiti, who plays at Barcelona, it's not there I will go and play'.
