Uruguay limp to dour victory over Saudi Arabia

FC Barcelona superstar Luis Suarez scored the only goal of the game as Uruguay defeated Saudi Arabia 1-0 to advance to the 2018 World Cup round of 16.

In a game lacking in chances and intensity, the only goal came from a Uruguay corner - the Saudi goalkeeper Al Owais came for the cross but misjudged it completely and Suarez was waiting at the back post to finish into the empty net. The defeat means both they and Egypt are eliminated from the tournament after successive defeats.

By scoring Suarez became the first Uruguay player to score in three consecutive World Cups, once again highlighting his world class ability.

Oscar Tabarez's side missed plenty of opportunities to add further goals, but a toothless Saudi outfit never seriously looked like snatching a point.

The Saudi Arabian national team's rough start to World Cup continued on Tuesday, as the team's plane caught fire in midair.

Juan Antonio Pizzi's Saudi Arabia continued to look far more assured on the ball than they did in the 5-0 drubbing by Russian Federation on the opening day of the tournament, with Hatan Bahbri firing a wild volley over shortly after seeing a long-range effort tipped away by Fernando Muslera.

Uruguay's Edinson Cavani wasted numerous chances, including one in the 14th minute when he skied a half volley over the bar.

"Cuper said Salah is desperate to play as much as possible in the World Cup".

Uruguay beat a 48-year curse of failing to win a World Cup finals opener on Friday, but needed an 89th-minute header to do so.

Fellow Uruguay supporter Juan Martin Di Pascua, 22, draped in a national team flag, said: "It makes us a bit anxious as he's the key for the team along with (Edinson) Cavani so I pray to God he starts playing well again soon".

Saudi Arabia also had to play most of the match without trusted midfielder Taisser Aljassam, who limped off before halftime with an injury after lunging forward for a challenge.
