Messi, Ronaldo bow out in dramatic knockout openers

The 1986 World Cup victor was pictured receiving treatment after that clash, following a health scare, but a pair of Spanish-language audio recordings suggested Maradona had suffered a fatal heart attack.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi saw their World Cup dreams snuffed out on Saturday as French teenager Kylian Mbappe flew the flag for a new generation in Russian Federation.

Ronaldo led Brazil to World Cup win in 2002.

For the second game running, it was a Paris Saint-Germain who was the matchwinner, Edinson Cavani bagging a devastating double either side of a Pepe equaliser to ensure both five-time Ballon d'Or winners were eliminated from the showpiece at the same stage.

Cavani picked out Suarez on the left with a cross-field ball, before continuing his run into the penalty area and meeting the Barcelona striker's return delivery at the back post, the ball smacking off his face and flying in. The two-time World Cup champions have posted wins in each of their past four Round of 16 matches, but will need more production from superstar Lionel Messi, who has scored just once since opening the tournament as a +1000 co-favourite on the Golden Boot odds.

"He is an exceptional player", said Uruguay's veteran coach Oscar Tabarez.

"I am sure he will. Cristiano still has a lot to give to the game", Santos said when asked if he felt his captain would carry on representing his country.

And Ronaldo was the man who helped him off the pitch.

FIFA has now commented on the situation by providing support for a player widely regarded to be one of the greatest ever, urged the 57-year-old - part of the FIFA Legends Program - to be respectful.
