Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal knocked out of World Cup by Uruguay

Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal knocked out of World Cup by Uruguay

The loss for Portugal against Uruguay ended the dream of legendary Cristiano Ronaldo, who alongside Argentina's Lionel Messi, may have to end a stellar global career without the biggest trophy in football. Messi on the other hand only managed one.

Portugal finished as runners-up to Spain in Group B, while Uruguay kept three successive clean sheets as they topped Group A ahead of hosts Russian Federation.

"I am convinced that he has a lot to give in football", said Santos, whose own future is in doubt after elimination here. And it also breeds unselfishness so that a natural scorer like Suarez makes an effort to give opportunities to Cavani. The team's youngest players were Guedes and defender Ruben Dias, both at 21. I'm very proud to represent the Portugal national team.

The European champions did not have enough to threaten Uruguay who emerged 2-1 winners in their round of 16 clash Saturday thanks to a brace from Edinson Cavani.

In the 7th minute, PSG's Edinson Cavani opened the scoring with a lovely header after a pinpoint cross from Suarez. "There aren't words to describe this". In the end it turned out to be a Madrid derby with the Atletico Madrid defensive centre-backs Diogo Godin and Jose Giminez completely blocking off Real's Ronaldo.

Uruguay boss Oscar Tabarez admits he's sweating on the fitness of Edinson Cavani after his match-winning display against Portugal.

Uruguay will now lock horns with France, who earlier defeated Argentina 4-3 in their round of 16 match, at the Nizhny Novgorod Stadium, Nizhny Novgorod on July 6.

Portugal would have to wait for the second half to equalise - with a goal in the 55th minute from Pepe.

Minutes Lionel Messi (eight games and 23 shots) and Cristiano Ronaldo (six games and 25 shots) have played in the World Cup knockout rounds without scoring.

"I'm happy, and I'm leaving here content because things went pretty well in general", Ronaldo said, as per BBC. "Usually we also score". The players came to play seven matches.

Ronaldo, now 33 and still playing some of the best soccer of his life, failed to provide the spark Portugal needed against Uruguay.

And he managed to score a-not-too-shabby four games in the tournament.

It was a five-pass buildup from deep in its own end that culminated in Uruguay's first goal, and the final two passes were ideal.

Cavani - hugging the touchline on the right wing - hit a brilliant crossfield pass to Suarez wide left. The 71-year-old Tabarez said after Saturday's match that "when you have the luck to win, you have to do it without gloating". "Uruguay had never scored like that".

While Uruguay is advancing, it now must be concerned with the status of Cavani after he limped off the field and immediately called for a substitute.

Santos said his side had studied their opponents but that it was impossible to legislate for Uruguay's first goal. The Uruguayans had gone 598 minutes since November 2017 without allowing a goal.
