Netflix Topples HBO in Emmy Nominations

Netflix racked up 112 nods while HBO earned 108.

According to Variety, Netflix favorites like The Crown and Stranger Things are to thank for its success with this year's nominations. As chief content officer Ted Sarandos noted in a statement, the service's tally encompassed 40 titles, showcasing its "varied and expansive slate". She wasn't nominated for an Emmy in 2017, either. And with Modern Family being shut out from the comedy series and acting categories for the first time, the broadcast networks slipped to 2 entrants in the top series categories - This Is Us for best drama and ABC's Black-ish for best comedy - tying an all-time low.

John Legend scores a nomination of his own for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie for his role as Jesus in NBC's "Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert". The series' 20 nods were the fourth-most for any show, finishing only behind "Game of Thrones" (22), "Saturday Night Live" (21), and "Westworld" (21). Meanwhile, newcomer Godless and comedy blowout GLOW also helped Netflix's numbers soar with 12 and 10 nominations apiece.

Read on for a look at some of those who didn't make the cut.

As always, the Emmys will be second-guessed and analyzed, looking for snubs and surprises.

"The Handmaid's Tale, " the dystopian sci-fi series that claimed top drama honors last year, drew 20 bids, including one for last year's best actress victor, Elisabeth Moss, and supporting bids for Alexis Bledel, Ann Dowd, Yvonne Strahovski and Joseph Fiennes.
