Just hours before arriving in London, the United States president questioned progress in Brexit talks and Britain's new plan to remain close to the European Union on regulatory standards for goods.

Trump will then join wife Melania as they head to Windsor Castle for their audience with the Queen before flying out to Scotland, where they are expected to visit both Trump Turnberry and Trump International Golf Links Scotland. But trip planners may go out of their way to shield Mr. Trump from viewing another aspect of the greeting: an oversized balloon depicting the president as an angry baby in a diaper that will be flown from Parliament Square during what are expected to be massive gatherings of protesters opposed to the US leader's presence.

Left-wing anti-Brexit group "Another Europe is Possible" have also parked vans with message that reads-'Trump: Go Home or Face Protest' in Parliament Square to mark US President's visit to the UK. "I'd like to see them be able to work it out so it could go quickly, whatever they work out".

Asked about Trump's comments, May said: "We're delivering on the vote of the British people to take back control of our money, our laws and our borders".

At the same time, Trump will be touring a defense site with May outside of London. After a dinner for business leaders in Blenheim Palace, birthplace of Winston Churchill, he will spent the night in the ambassador's residence in north London.

In the busy south London neighborhood of Brixton, Victor Greetham, who runs a jazz bar, said he hasn't been to a demonstration since he protested against the Iraq War in 2003, but he planned to attend one of the protests against Trump's visit.

Protesters are set to descend on the Regent's Park residence, with plans to blare out recordings of children crying for their parents at United States detention centres.

The embassy also warned Americans, however, to "exercise caution if unexpectedly in the vicinity of large gatherings that may become violent".

Mr Trump and his wife Melania arrived at Stansted airport, where he was met by the UK's global trade secretary Liam Fox.

Opposition MPS, backed by an online petition signed by almost 1.9 million people, called on May to cancel the state visit offered when she met Trump in Washington after his inauguration in January a year ago.

Ignoring all diplomatic niceties, the convention-shredding U.S. president set up the four-day visit with a rebuke of his beleaguered host as she battles to stop her government falling apart over Brexit. "It's really kind of irrelevant to what we're trying to do, and doesn't express the opinion of the British people that I've met", he told the BBC's Today programme.

Sarah Elliott, chairwoman of Republicans Overseas UK, told CNN she did not think Trump would be fazed by the stunt.

On Friday, demonstrators are expected to gather near Chequers, the Prime Minister's country residence, where May and Trump will hold a working lunch.

Trump will spend the weekend at the former, which he described as a "magical place", before heading to Helsinki, Finland, for a much-anticipated summit on July 16 with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
