They make good love in Croatia - Lovren calls for respect

Reaching the final caps a hugely impressive 2018 for Lovren, who came through a hard run of form for Liverpool to play a key part in reaching the UEFA Champions League final in May.

The defender, who also reached the Champions League final with Liverpool in May, will face France in the World Cup final on Sunday and the 29-year-old feels he has proved himself this season.

Speaking to beIN SPORTS, Lovren said: "Modric is not one of the best but the best player in the middle in the world and, if we win, he deserves this World Cup".

The Liverpool centre-back played his part in keeping England striker Harry Kane quiet at Luzhniki Stadium as Zlatko Dalic's side bounced back from Kieran Trippier's fifth-minute opener to win 2-1 in extra time.

He told beIN Sport: "People said I had a hard season but I don't agree with that".

I showed why I took Liverpool to the final of the Champions League and now with the national team, and now I'm in the World Cup final.

'I think people should recognise that I am also one of the best defenders in the world and not just talk nonsense'. "People are crying. It's something historical for us", the Liverpool defender said.

"We will never forget this". We have come back after 20 years to the semis and we deserve it.

"We have the chance to do something better, and hopefully we can do it on Sunday".

But Lovren said he enjoyed taking on the world's best as he looks to showcase his talent on a huge stage.

Lovren says he remembers his mum took him and they went to the basement and can't remember how long they sat there.

And he is delighted that this current Croatian generation have finally lived up to, and now surpassed, the standards of the 1998 team which reached the semi-finals.
