Serena Williams’s husband feared for tennis star’s life after child birth

Serena Williams’s husband feared for tennis star’s life after child birth

The German now only needs to win the French Open to join Williams and Maria Sharapova as holders of all four major titles. Afterward, neither woman quibbled over the late start, pointing out that tournament officials had no option otherwise and insisting it hadn't affected them. The Czech duo are also the first pairing to claim both the girls' and women's doubles titles at Wimbledon, after winning as juniors in 2013.

Victory caps a brilliant return to form for Kerber, who is now a three-time grand slam champion having gained revenge for her defeat to Williams in the 2016 final at the All England Club.

But the key role in this match played a number of unforced errors five vs 24 in favor of Kerber. She beat Williams in the Australian Open final that year, then won that year's U.S. Open to briefly replace her at No. 1 in the rankings.

These weren't just words of obligatory appreciation, it was an assessment of a player, who had to survive 125 miles per hour aces to rightfully lay her hands on the Venus Rosewater Dish for the first time.

In a shocker that lasted barely over an hour, an inspired Angelique Kerber blew away Serena Williams 6-3, 6-3, ending the American's imperious run in this tournament to become the Wimbledon singles champion.

Toward the end, a reporter asked Williams how she'd turn her defeat into a happy story for her daughter. "It's always an honour to share a court with her".

Also supporting Williams on Centre Court are golfer Tiger Woods, Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton, and Vogue magazine editor Anna Wintour. The newly minted Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle, was seen in the audience fighting back her own tears at the emotional performance, the gravity of the championship performances, and the heartfelt words coming from the mouth of one of professional tennis' premiere women.

Djokovic and Nadal's match was started under the roof and finished under it on Saturday, despite clear blue skies and temperatures hovering close to 30°C.

The opening set saw Kerber break in the opening game, and despite losing that break, she would break back consecutively for 4-3 and 6-3 to take the set, all while locking her down serve.

The victor will face Kevin Anderson in Sunday's final.

The 23-time major champion was broken again at 4-3 and conceded the set with a stiff backhand into the net.

The start of the match had been delayed by the other men's semifinal, in which Kevin Anderson defeated John Isner in the second longest match in Wimbledon history. "Everybody was playing in white on the grass court".

Graf helped Kerber get her game on track earlier in the her career, so it was an especially sweet moment for the 30-year-old to follow in her footsteps at Wimbledon.

Stirred by her husband and a flurry of celebrity supporters like Tiger Woods, Lewis Hamilton and Anna Wintour, the 23-time Grand Slam victor forced her way into the match with a sublime volley in the third game of the second set, but again faltered in the very next point. Williams missed the tournament previous year while pregnant.
