Batwoman to be first superhero show with openly gay lead

A Batwoman series is in development for the CW network according to The Hollywood Reporter. The actress will first appear in an Arrowverse crossover event in December, though it's not known which show - Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, or Legends of Tomorrow - will introduce her. But don't call her a hero yet.

LONDON-Lesbian superhero Batwoman is powering towards a ground-breaking role as the star of her own television series. Kate Kane appeared in Gotham during a period when DC had been publishing its Infinite Crisis series starting in 2005. Should the live-action series get picked up, it'll be Berlanti's 7th show on the network and his 15th on-air series, overall.

Batwoman is being overseen by producer Greg Berlanti, and written by Caroline Dries (The Vampire Diaries). But, if the show makes it to TV, Batwoman will be the first major series with a lesbian as the lead character.

Kate Kane has never been seen on any screen, big or small, so her introduction this winter on The CW will be a landmark for the character. An openly gay lesbian lead would be the first for The CW's DC Comics shows, though they've certainly been quite progressive with their characters over the years.

"Kate Kane soars onto the streets of Gotham as Batwoman, an out lesbian and highly trained street fighter primed to snuff out the failing city's criminal resurgence", the official description goes.

The CW's superhero offerings are filled with gay characters. One of Batwoman's love interests from the comics, Maggie Sawyer, was also involved with Alex Danvers, with the two engaged to be married for a short time. Though inspired by Batman, she operated independently of him. In fact, Batwoman was one of the most popular books of the early New 52 era before the creative team of W. Haden Blackman and J.H. Williams III left the book after DC refused to let Batwoman marry Maggie Sawyer. Kane is a wealthy heiress who becomes inspired by Batman and chooses to also put her wealth and resources towards a campaign to fight crime as a masked vigilante in her home of Gotham City.
