"I think we're in a time right now where more than ever representation in the media matters", she said.

Maines' character is assumed to be a fresh take on Nura Nal aka Dream Girl, an alien from the planet Naltor who possesses precognitive abilities.

Maines first gained national attention for her battle against the Orono school district over her right to use the girls' bathroom.

The first transgender superhero will be featured in CW's television series, "Supergirl". And so it seems only fitting that we have a trans superhero for trans kids to look up to. She also did a guest stint on Royal Pains.

While she said the "men in dresses" portrayal of trans people on TV has been "damaging" for a long time, she said we're in the right moment to be having a meaningful effect on society in the portrayal of the trans community.

As a trans actress playing a trans character, Maines had some thoughts on the controversy surrounding Scarlett Johansson's casting as the lead in "Rug & Tug", a film about trans man Dante Tex Gill, a massage parlor owner. "Having trans people play trans roles show that we are valid in our identities and we exist". Instead, the upcoming collection of episodes will see Nia, a new member of CatCo's reporting team, grab hold of her inner strength to become what she was always meant to be: the superhero Dreamer. "And so when we have cisgender actors play trans characters, it further that stereotype that we are playing dress up, which is not true".

Maines made history as the plaintiff in the ME court case Doe v. Clenchy, in which her family successfully sued her school district for her right to use a female-assigned restroom.

"Nia is so much more than just a trans superhero".

"Now, it's very hopeful and relieving to watch creators and writers and directors and casting offices stepping up to put trans people in trans roles, so we can portray ourselves and we can start to disprove some of those stereotypes about us".

Starring Melissa Benoist as Kara Danvers, David Harewood as Martian Manhunter, Mehcad Brooks as Jimmy Olsen and Chyler Leigh as Alex Danver, Supergirl returns on a new night, Sunday, Oct. 14, at 8 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.
