DeRozan thanks Toronto fans: 'You embraced me as one of your own'

DeMar DeRozan #10 of the Toronto Raptors reacts during the second half of Game 4 of the second round of the Eastern Conference playoffs against the Cleveland Cavaliers at Quicken Loans Arena on May 7, 2018 in Cleveland, Ohio.

One such player is Spurs legend David Robinson, who's been a steady supporter of the team and makes sporadic appearances in home games.

"Words could never express what you've meant to me", reads his Instagram post. I was just a 19 year old kid from Compton when we first met, but you took me in and embraced me as one of your own.

"Here's what someone who knows Leonard as well as anybody told me privately: 'He's going to fall in love with Toronto - it's going to happen".

But he said he regretted perhaps indicating to DeRozan that he wouldn't be traded. All I ever wanted to do was duplicate it 10x over just to show my appreciation.

On Saturday, DeRozan wrote an emotional message on Instagram thanking the city and Canada for their support. Sell you out quick for a little bit of nothing. "Soon you'll understand... Don't disturb..."

"I had a conversation with DeMar at summer league, and I really want to leave it at that", Ujiri said Friday.

Raptors President Masai Ujiri was apologetic on Friday, admitting that he may have inadvertently misled the team's franchise player. "We spoke. I think maybe my mistake was talking about what we expected going forward from him, not necessarily about the trade", Ujiri added.

Robinson, a 10-time All-Star and two-time National Basketball Association champion with the Spurs, said last month prior to the trade that Leonard needed to use his voice as the face of the franchise, but clearly that didn't happen.

There had been plenty of speculation throughout the 2017-18 season about the influence of Leonard's uncle, Dennis Robertson, and agent, Mitch Frankel, with the Spurs wondering if the men speaking on Leonard's behalf had ulterior motives.
