State media: Syrian troops enter southern town

Military forces fighting for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad raised the Syrian flag in the city of Quneitra on Thursday as the regime forces tighten their grip over the Syrian side of the Golan Heights, across the border from Israel and Jordan.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said regime forces had entered the buffer zone separating Syrian territory from the Israeli-annexed Golan and hoisted the flag there.

The government-controlled Syrian Central Military Media said troops raised the flag on the frontier Thursday afternoon. The holdouts include one pocket near the frontier held by a group affiliated to the Islamic State.

They suggest that the launch was made during the fighting between Syrian government forces and the opposition.

A military spokesman said that two projectiles were fired from Syria into Israeli territory, without providing further detail.

Tensions had risen a day earlier after Israel shot down a Syrian warplane that it said had crossed into airspace above the Israeli-occupied Golan. "It was then intercepted by the Patriot missiles".

"In response to the two rockets launched at Israeli territory from Syria, IDF aircraft targeted the rocket launcher it was sacked from", the Israeli military said. Israel also activated its aerial defense system on Monday in response to missiles fired from Syria.

The Ministry of defence of the Russian Federation made an unusual statement thanking the Israeli army for the attack on Syria, RIA Novosti reported.

"Exact retaliation aircraft and artillery of the army of defense of Israel all the terrorists of ISIS* and rocket launchers, were promptly destroyed", - stated in the message.

Russian and Israeli officials have met several times the past couple of months to discuss Israel's security concerns in Syria.

Syrian troops have been on the offensive against insurgents in the country's southwest for weeks and have captured much of the area all the way to the Jordanian border and to the frontier with Israel.
