10,000 more people ordered to flee wildfires

At least seven people were still missing in Shasta County, California, as shifting winds, dry fuel and steep terrain helped the monstrous fire engulf nearly 100,000 acres by Sunday night, authorities said.

About 38,000 people have been evacuated in Shasta County due to the Carr Fire, officials said. Authorities have intensified their operations as dozens of firefighters have been deployed to control the raging inferno. It remains 5 percent contained.

Flames have destroyed at least 966 structures in the area, making it one of the top 10 most destructive wildfires in California history. Redding fire Inspector Jeremy Stoke was also killed, but details of his death were not released.

The Carr Fire, the Cranston Fire, the Ferguson Fire and more recent wildfires have been scorching tens of thousands of acres all around California. "But we'll make new memories and get new stuff". I got him and helped him out of there and when I got back down there the fire was" - Bledsoe paused, seeming to search for a word to accurately convey the chaos - "the fire was. just intense. On one side of the road, homes are gone, while some on the other side were spared.

More than 1,000 homes and other buildings have been destroyed or damaged.

The fire is at the back door, come and get us.' I said, 'I'm close by, son, I'm trying to get in there.

"What we're seeing here is an incomplete burn situation", Capt. Doug Miles said as his crew used picks, shovels and rakes to open up piles that just days ago were family homes.

"I said 'I'm on my way.' So I just throwed down everything and took off", he said.

On Saturday, it pushed southwest of Redding, the largest city in the region, toward the tiny communities of Ono, Igo and Gas Point.

One of those who experienced the destruction firsthand was Redding resident Hannalora Lewis, who was woken up by her mother Thursday morning and told to evacuate.

"My babies are dead", she said.

They went to a nearby house that was "known for criminal activities in the past". The sheriff says there is evidence that door-to-door notifications were made in the area.

Bethel Church has asked people to pray that the winds die down, for the smoke to lift for planes to be able to provide air coverage, for no more loss of life and for peace, safety and wisdom for firefighters and first responders. The three apparently failed to heed an evacuation order for the Redding area, according to KCRA in Sacramento.

At a news conference Sunday, Shasta County Sheriff Tom Bosenko said the victim, who was not identified, didn't evacuate despite receiving an evacuation warning.

The Carr wildfire was actually caused by the mechanical failure of a vehicle, according to the State authorities.

The California wildfire season has got off to a risky and deadly start in 2018, with the number of acres burned sitting above average for this early point in the California wildfire season.

The Cranston Fire near San Bernardino has burned more than 13,130 acres and is 57% contained.

The weather on Sunday is expected to offer no relief for firefighters, with temperatures over 100 Fahrenheit (37.7 Celsius), low humidity and gusty winds, the National Weather Service said.

Originally from Hawaii, Hughes had been with California's Arrowhead Interagency Hotshots for four years and reached the rank of captain.
